Be a Big Fish in Your Own Pond
by Clint Watson
Dear Oil,
Be a big fish in your own pond . . . . even if it’s a small pond. Don’t
be a small fish in a bunch of big ponds.
If you’re not sure what my point here is, I’ll turn it over to Seth.
Seth writes
:
“If you have a presence on twitter, squidoo, blogs, facebook,
myspace, linkedin and 20 other sites, the chances of finding critical
mass at any of them is close to zero. But if you dominate, if you’re the
goto person, the king of your hill, magical things happen. One follower
in each of twenty places is worthless. Twenty connected followers in one
place is a tribe . It’s the foundation
for building something that matters.
This is why I don’t have a podcast, a video channel, any
activity to speak of on Facebook. It’s why I don’t use Twitter or travel
the country visiting bookstores.”
Seth doesn’t Twitter. Seth doesn’t Facebook or Myspace. Ironically, I
don’t even think Seth Squidoos much. Nope. Seth blogs, that’s where
he’s chosen to be the big fish. That would probably be a good idea for
you too.
After all, if you’re going to build a tribe, you might as well build it
on your own turf.
Sincerely,
Clint Watson

can try ours .
Editor’s Note: One way for an artist to build a following is through the
traditional art gallery system . . . . if you can get your work into
galleries that is. But how do galleries discover new artists? As a
former gallery director, I know how difficult it is. Believe me,
Galleries are searching for artists as much as you are searching for
galleries. Artist Advocate Magazine is an exciting new and effective way
to reach thousands of galleries (over 6,500) with your art work. Plus,
as readers of FineArtViews, we’ve arranged special pricing that makes it
is a “no-brainer.” Place an ad in the upcomming issue of Artist
Advocate before November 10th and you’ll save $100!

Pat VanOutry Wrote:
I certainly made a wise decision in choosing this web design company for
many reasons. All the interesting articles and blogs to read, plus all
the other features to help any struggling artist today. This particular
article helped me see very clearly that we all have similar concerns,
fears and thoughts. We are all in the same boat struggling to create
something out of nothing …and gladly so.

Make Sure Your Website Doesn’t
Drive Art Collectors Away!
11 Essential Elements of Every Artist Website
The Artist’s Guide to Creating a Website that Really Works
by Clint Watson
This e-book will tell you (or your web designer) exactly what to do to
make sure when art collectors visit your art website that they enjoy the
experience…instead of leaving annoyed.
Your website is you “home base”.your “hub.” - where you and your
collectors “meet” online.
You need to make sure that your website includes certain information and
features that art collectors have come to expect.
I’ve been marketing art since 1989 and have managed various online art
marketing sites since 1996 . . . I’ve learned what works, what doesn’t
and what art buyers expect. This e-book represents a compilation of the
most important elements and best practices that should be included on
every artist’s website.
In this 39 page e-book that every artist must read, you’ll learn:
1. What art collectors expect from an artist website
2. Why you need to avoid Flash
3. How to set up your website for maximum success
4. How to avoid annoying your and driving awaysite visitors
5. The best way to write your artist biography page
6. How to design your site properly for search engines
7. Much, much more!
If you’re working with a web developer, no problem! The e-book also
includes a checklist for web developers that you can simply hand your
web guru and say, “make sure my site has everything on this list.”
Listen to what one artist recently told me about our marketing advice:
“We have always tried to incorporate your ideas about adding substantive
content on our web site and blog. Recently we sold a $3,000 painting
because we had followed your advice. . . Thanks for your helpful
marketing advice.”
- Artist, Tommy Thompson
